Formerly this term was restricted to sources that employed the principle of electroluminescence to produce light, but solid-state lighting (SSL), including both light-emitting diode (LED) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) technologies, have witnessed rapid improvements and impressive energy-savings, and surface-area sources employing these technologies are now termed light panels as well.
