Astronomy, Space & Science
Q: Is Pluto a planet? What characteristics does it need to be considered a planet?

A: In 1992, it was discovered that Pluto (along with its satellite Charon) was not the sole object in the region beyond Neptune, but merely one of a large population of icy bodies called the "Kuiper Belt." The discovery of the Kuiper Belt sparked a debate on whether Pluto should still be classified as a planet. In the end, the debate boils down to a matter of personal opinion, for there is no official definition of a planet. From a scientific point of view, Pluto is best understood as a Kuiper Belt Object, since it shares the same origin and evolutionary history as other bodies in the Kuiper Belt.
